Renowned fantasy author George R.R. Martin, best known for his critically acclaimed A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was adapted into the global phenomenon Game of Thrones, recently claimed that he was snubbed by Worldcon, one of the world’s most prestigious science fiction conventions. Despite suggesting several panel ideas for the upcoming event, Martin says he did not receive a response from the organizers, leaving many fans puzzled. The Application Process: What Went Wrong?
According to the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) organizers, the issue stemmed from Martin not following the proper application process. The event, which prides itself on fairness and inclusivity, requires all program proposals to be submitted through a formal application system. Martin, however, chose to contact the event’s programming chair directly in January and February, requesting a phone conversation rather than following the standard procedure.
George R.R. Martin expressed his frustration on his blog, stating that he was not provided with a phone number and was instead directed to an application link. He also mentioned that the link came with a warning that applying did not guarantee a spot on the program. Despite his efforts to reach out multiple times, he received no response from the organizers, ultimately resulting in his exclusion from the official event schedule.
What Panels Did George R.R. Martin Propose?
The 75-year-old author had several ideas for Worldcon panels, including a discussion with writers from his Wild Cards anthology series, a screening of short films inspired by the works of the late author Howard Waldrop, and a tribute panel dedicated to Waldrop, who passed away in January. These proposals were in line with the convention’s focus on science fiction literature, which typically includes a wide range of topics from books and movies to games, science, and culture.

Despite his enthusiasm for these panels, Martin’s failure to submit his ideas through the correct channels meant that they were not considered by the organizers. With nearly 1,000 proposals submitted by members, the volunteer-run event had to adhere strictly to its application process to ensure fairness for all participants.
Worldcon’s Response and Martin’s Future Participation
Although George R.R. Martin‘s panel ideas were not included in the official program, Worldcon organizers have made it clear that the author is still welcome to attend the event. Fans of the Game of Thrones creator may even have the chance to meet him informally during the convention. Martin himself has confirmed that he plans to attend and is looking forward to the event, despite the scheduling hiccup. He also hinted that he is currently working on the much-anticipated sixth installment of his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Worldcon 2024, which will be held in Glasgow from August 8 to 12, is expected to attract over 9,000 attendees. This marks the third time the convention will be hosted in Glasgow, following successful events in 1995 and 2004. The program will feature over 1,000 hours of content, covering a diverse array of topics including literature, film, technology, and science.
Notable events at the convention will include a panel exploring Scottish science fiction beyond the works of legendary author Iain M. Banks and another examining the role of Gaelic and minority languages in the genre. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see appearances by award-winning authors such as Adrian Tchaikovsky, Hugo Award winner Mary Robinette Kowal, and Marvel Comics writer Charlie Jane Anders.
