Tragic Outcome in 1 dead East Wichita Following Officer-Involved Shooting
In a devastating turn of events, the Wichita Police Department (WPD) and Chief Joe Sullivan have confirmed the death of a man in the aftermath of an officer-involved shooting in east Wichita.
About One dead in officer-involved shooting in west Wichita
The incident transpired when officers were dispatched to a domestic violence call in the vicinity of 4200 E. Gilbert around 2:15 p.m. Upon arrival, officers engaged with both the woman who had placed the 911 call and a male suspect.
According to reports from WPD, the woman conveyed that the suspect had made several statements indicating suicidal thoughts. As officers attempted to conduct a search for weapons, the situation escalated when the suspect produced a firearm. Despite officers’ directives to drop the weapon, the suspect allegedly refused and proceeded to point the gun at the officers. In response to this imminent threat, the officers discharged their firearms. The suspect was promptly transported to the hospital, where regrettably, he succumbed to his injuries.
Chief Sullivan acknowledged the profound impact of the incident on both the suspect’s family and the officer involved, recognizing the overarching tragedy associated with the loss of life.

The subsequent investigation into this officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
Initial reports had indicated that one person was critically injured in the incident, which unfolded around 2:45 p.m. in the 4200 block of E. Gilbert. Early dispatches had suggested that officers were in distress with shots fired, but WPD later clarified that no officers sustained injuries.
