Maury Povich and his wife, Connie Chung, make a rare appearance for a date night as they attend the Daytime Emmys together

Maury Povich and Connie Chung enjoyed a special night out as they attended the 50th Daytime Emmy Awards. Povich, who is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, had Chung present the honour. The event, hosted at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, saw Povich, 84, donning a classic black tuxedo, while Chung, 77, chose a vibrant hot pink blazer paired with black pants. Adding flair to her ensemble, she wore dangling earrings and carried a white clutch.

Ahead of receiving his Lifetime Achievement award, Povich, whose long-running daytime talk show “Maury” concluded in September 2022, took the stage to pay tribute to the evening’s Gold and Silver Circle Inductees. This exclusive society recognizes individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the television industry, demonstrating excellence, mentorship, leadership, and professional accomplishments over 50 or 25 years.

Povich and Chung, married in 1984, are parents to their 28-year-old son, Matthew.

Reflecting on their love story in 2020, the couple shared insights into their early days and the journey that brought them to where they are today. Chung, recalling their initial encounter in 1969 when she was a copygirl at a Washington, D.C. TV station, described Povich as a big star, and she, as a young kid. Despite their professional dynamic, Chung hoped for acknowledgement. “He was very gruff and very matter-of-fact. He never looked up.”I often wondered, ‘Perhaps one day he’ll recognize that I’m a human being.’ I spent two years working there, and then I moved on to kick-start my career — leaving him behind in the process.”

The couple dated for the next six years before exchanging vows in the presence of 65 of their nearest and dearest. Povich and Chung attribute their enduring romance to playful banter and open communication, navigating both the highs and lows as they supported each other through career challenges, infertility struggles, and the adoption of their son Matthew in 1995.

Povich emphasized their approach to conflict resolution, stating, “Whatever discussions or arguments go on during the day, once the head hits the pillow, it’s over and not to be continued the next morning. It is not on my mind.” He added that respecting each other’s careers, space, and values has been pivotal to their lasting bond, noting, “There’s no need for any do-overs. Maybe that’s the reason why we’re still married.”

The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards are currently broadcasting live on CBS and Paramount+.
